What We Do
As the civilian, non-military component of the Coast Guard Team, created by an act of congress in 1939, the Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all of its missions except military and law enforcement actions. Over 34,000 volunteer Auxiliarists, nation-wide, actively patrol our waterways and regularly meet with the boating public at marinas and in classrooms. Auxiliarists also serve side-by-side with active duty members of the Coast Guard at their stations and in times of disaster.Opportunities For You
Recreational boating in the U.S. is growing by leaps and bounds! The Auxiliay needs more quality members like you to help make boating safer for all! If you are a U.S. citizen 17 years of age and up, you can join!Members learn with the best and are eligible to receive the world's finest on-the-water training. Advanced training courses in Navigation, Seamanship, Communications, Weather, Patrols, Administration and Search & Rescue are available as well as courses from the Coast Guard Institute. You can become proficient in any or all of the following areas.
- Public Education - teaching courses on boating safety, navigation, and seamanship to recreational boaters of all ages.
- Vessel Safety Checks - giving free safety checks to recreational and commercial fishing vessels.
- Marine Environmental Protection - promoting clean waterways through marine pollution awareness programs that teach you to recognize, protect and access the environment.
- Operations - providing boaters and the Coast Guard with helpful information and emergency assistance.
- Recruiting - building a strong Coast Guard team by promoting awareness of career opportunities for service.
- Administrative Support - assist the Coast Guard in areas such as computer operations, radio watchstanding, publications and public affairs.
